Expansive view of the Klein Karoo with layered green hills, distant farmlands, and dramatic clouds rolling over the horizon.

This photograph captures the Klein Karoo in all its rugged serenity—rolling hills cloaked in soft greens, valleys touched by farmlands, and moody skies pressing low above the horizon. To me, it is a portrait of resilience and renewal, a landscape that breathes patience into every traveler who pauses long enough to see.

I just returned from a trip to the Karoo—where the horizon stretches wide, silence holds its own music, and time seems to slow down. (Don’t worry, I’ll share more about that journey soon!) For now, life has shifted from those wide-open landscapes to the confined chaos of a bathroom renovation.

One day it’s sunsets over dusty plains, and the next it’s dust over everything—along with the chaos of endless interruptions. From misplaced tools to half-packed cupboards, renovation life has its own rhythm, one that tests my patience as much as it teaches me about resilience. And let’s be honest—sometimes it teaches me more about finding my sense of humor before I lose my sanity.

Rocky stream flowing gently through the Klein Karoo, framed by rugged cliffs and green brush under a soft cloudy sky.

This photograph captures a tranquil scene in the Klein Karoo: water flowing steadily over stones, rugged cliffs rising on either side, and greenery softening the rocky landscape. It reflects the essence of the region—resilient, grounding, and quietly alive—and mirrors the rhythm of life renovations, where beauty emerges in the flow of persistence through obstacles.

Life in the Midst of Dust

Renovations, I’ve discovered, are equal parts excitement and exhaustion. The excitement comes from dreaming of the finished space—a bathroom that feels like a sanctuary. The exhaustion? Well, that comes from trying to find a toothbrush when half your cupboards are packed away in boxes.

Still, in the middle of the mess, there’s an odd kind of beauty. Dust floating in a ray of morning light reminds me of the Karoo’s hazy sunrises. A stack of neatly cut tiles looks almost like a mosaic waiting to tell its story. These little details are what life renovations are made of—messy, imperfect, yet strangely beautiful.

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11

From Karoo to Construction

Travel teaches me to slow down and see differently, and so does renovation. The Karoo reminded me that vast spaces are made of countless small details: a single windmill, a lone tree, the golden flicker of light across dry grass. Bathroom remodels remind me of the same truth—life renovations are built tile by tile, choice by choice.

Visitors admire dramatic stalactites and stalagmites inside the illuminated chambers of the Cango Caves in South Africa.

The Cango Caves—where stone becomes sculpture, shaped slowly by patience and time.

This photograph captures the grandeur of the Cango Caves, one of South Africa’s natural wonders. Towering limestone formations—stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the ground—meet in breathtaking displays sculpted over millions of years. The presence of visitors in the frame gives scale to the cavern’s immensity, reminding us that nature’s artistry dwarfs even our boldest creations. Like life renovations, the caves are a testimony to patience, persistence, and transformation through time.

It isn’t glamorous, and it doesn’t always feel magical when the floor is covered in dust and the plumber hasn’t arrived. But like the Karoo, the beauty is often in the in-between spaces: the anticipation, the waiting, the patience to let change unfold.

“Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:4

Learning on the Road: Electric Cars and Unexpected Lessons

And speaking of patience, our Karoo travels brought another kind of challenge: journeying with an electric car. I thought sunsets and scenery would be the most memorable parts of the trip—but instead, it was learning how (and where) to charge along the way.

We discovered new things daily: how slow a “fast” charger can feel when you just want a cup of coffee and the open road; how some places are wonderfully accommodating while others leave you hunting for plugs and patience. For me, the abundant frustrations—like finding out a charger was down after planning a whole route around it—felt overwhelming at times.

But here’s the thing: patience is included free of charge, but fast charging? Not so much. Still, those pauses became part of the adventure: unexpected coffee stops, conversations with strangers, and a reminder that even detours are part of life renovations.

“Not all detours are setbacks; some are simply new views of the journey.”

Little Lessons from the Mess

Here are a few reminders I’ve tucked into my pocket while living with construction dust and navigating life renovations on the road:

  • 🌸 Find small joys in the chaos. A vase of flowers on a dusty table changes the whole mood.

  • Remember it’s temporary. Mess doesn’t last forever—life renovations do.

  • 🎨 Let creativity guide you. Whether it’s choosing tiles or reframing travel frustrations, creativity makes the process meaningful.

A Creative Thread Through It All

Even in the midst of renovations and unpacking suitcases from the Karoo, moments of beauty still find their way in—sometimes in the most unexpected forms. On this trip, it wasn’t just landscapes or caves that spoke to me, but also the quiet presence of giraffes, standing tall against the hills.

There’s something grounding about watching them—unhurried, graceful, yet firmly rooted. They remind me that perspective matters: sometimes you need to lift your gaze to see beyond the dust and interruptions of daily life. In many ways, this is its own kind of life renovation—reshaping how I see the world, refining my patience, and honoring beauty in the present moment, no matter how chaotic the background may be.

Three giraffes stand among the green hills of the Karoo, their long necks rising against a cloudy sky.

This photograph captures the elegance of giraffes in the Karoo, their patterned coats glowing warmly against the muted greens of the hills. Their towering presence evokes both strength and gentleness, reminding us that perspective often comes from rising above the noise of the moment. While not part of my portfolio, this image holds its place here as a symbol of how life renovations—like the giraffe’s height—offer us new ways to see what is already before us.

“Lift up your eyes on high and see who created these.” – Isaiah 40:26

For now, I’m holding the Karoo’s quiet beauty in my heart, living through the hammering of home renovation, learning patience from electric car detours, and polishing images for the showcase. All of it—the dust, the journeys, the frustrations, and the photographs—reminds me that life renovations don’t happen in a single moment. They unfold in dust, laughter, waiting, and the courage to begin again.

And really, what an adventure it has been. From sunsets in the Karoo to the dusty state of our electric car, I’m reminded that travel (and life) rarely goes as neatly as planned. But maybe that’s the point—adventure is found in the unexpected turns, the interruptions, and even the dirt that clings long after the road has ended.

A dust-covered electric car at a charging station after a Karoo road trip, symbolizing the adventure and unpredictability of travel.

This photo captures our electric car at the end of a long Karoo journey, blanketed in layers of dust that tell their own story of roads traveled, detours taken, and lessons learned. It’s more than just a travel snapshot—it’s a symbol of life renovations: the mess, the interruptions, and the beauty found in the unexpected. Just as the dust clings long after the drive, so do the memories and reminders that adventure often lies in the unplanned moments.

Lord, thank You for the beauty hidden in both the wide horizons and the dusty corners of our lives. Teach us to see Your hand in the interruptions, the frustrations, and the unfinished places. May we find patience in waiting, courage in change, and joy in the adventure of becoming. As we walk through life’s renovations, help us to lift our eyes—like the giraffes—to new perspectives, trusting that You are shaping something beautiful, layer by layer, day by day. Amen.

I can’t wait to share more of my adventures with you in the weeks ahead—photographs and stories not only from the Karoo, but from winding roads, quiet villages, hidden corners, and wild landscapes that have left their mark on me. Each journey carries its own dust and wonder, its interruptions and surprises, and together they weave the ongoing story of life renovations.

Like our car at the end of the trip, layered in travel dust, life too carries the evidence of where we’ve been. Adventure isn’t found only in faraway horizons—it’s in every step we dare to take, even through chaos and change.

And now I’d love to hear from you—what adventures, big or small, have shaped you lately? Share your stories, your photos, your glimpses of beauty. Because when we share the road, even the dusty parts, the journey feels lighter and richer.

With love, laughter, and a touch of wanderlust, may your path be filled with peace, wonder, and joy. ❣️
