Awakening to Wonder: My Journey of Embracing Life’s Sacred Moments Through the Lens
“For me, photography is more than an image; it’s a sacred whisper from the soul, capturing the extraordinary in each precious moment”
****
My journey with photography began in the quiet darkrooms of the 1980s, well before the days of digital editing and instant enhancements. Back then, I wasn’t a photographer, but a photographic artist, spending hours in the dim light, retouching negatives with a single-hair brush and the gentlest touch of dye. I remember the soft glow of the light on the retouching machine and the gentle hum of its vibration, grounding me as I carefully worked on each negative. It was slow, meticulous work, yet there was a rhythm to it, a meditative stillness that invited me into a deep focus—a kind of prayer over each tiny detail.
In those moments, I began to understand that photography wasn’t just about capturing faces; it was about honoring the essence of people, preserving their stories with reverence and care.
Let’s journey together with a lens of reverence, finding the extraordinary in every cherished moment.
🌿 The Healing Power of Photography 📸
As I grew in the craft of photographic artistry, I added skills that enriched my work—airbrushing and hand-painting sepia photographs. This allowed me to restore even the most delicate and damaged images, preserving history and bringing a renewed sense of joy to people who thought these memories were lost forever. Each restoration was a rewarding journey, not only for me but for those who entrusted me with their precious memories. 💫
As I worked, restoring torn and faded photographs, I watched families rediscover pieces of their past. The joy—and often the tears—that would cross their faces as they saw loved ones brought back to life showed me that images have the power to heal, to reconnect us to moments and memories we thought were lost. Those early days taught me that art could be a bridge, a way of seeing that goes beyond the surface and touches the soul.
“Art has the power to mend not just paper and ink, but the hearts and memories of those it touches.”
🪞Mirror of Grace: Seeing Anew🪞
Years later, I found myself moving from the darkroom into my own studio, capturing portraits of women who often struggled to see their own beauty. I’ll never forget photographing my niece, who once described herself as “big and ugly.” Through the lens, I saw her differently—I saw her light, her strength, her kindness. And when she looked at the final images, something shifted in her too. She carried those photos with her everywhere, a reminder of a truth she hadn’t fully embraced yet: that she was deeply beautiful, inside and out.
“Through the lens, we find beauty in places we didn’t know exited, especially within ourselves”
Moments like these taught me that photography, when approached with love and care, can open a person’s eyes to their own worth. It can be a path toward self-discovery, a way of seeing ourselves as God sees us, with compassion and grace.
In the Quiet Places: Grace and Purpose Revealed
Through the fog of an uncertain future, gentle threads of grace wove a path, guiding me back to purpose
Life, however, doesn’t always follow a straight path. There came a time when I had to let go of my studio, pack away my cameras, and step into a season of uncertainty. It felt like a part of my soul had gone quiet, as if I had lost a piece of myself. Yet, through it all, my faith held me steady. I trusted that God had a purpose even in the stillness, that there was meaning in the waiting. And in time, I was drawn back to the camera, but in a way I never expected—halfway across the world in South Africa, where I had moved with my husband. Here, in the beauty of this land, photography became my way of seeing the world anew, a way of stepping into the present moment with gratitude and awe.
Sometimes, purpose finds us in the places we least expect, like gentle threads weaving through stillness.
A Garden of Grace: Discovering the Divine in Nature
Each petal, each leaf, a quiet revelation-a gift from God woven into nature's canvas.
In my garden, where flowers bloom year-round, each petal is like a quiet revelation. I walk through the rows of succulents and blossoms, camera in hand, finding endless wonder in the intricate design of each leaf, each stem. This practice of mindful seeing, of truly looking, has become a form of worship, a way to deepen my connection to God and to the world around me. South Africa’s beauty, from the dramatic coastline to the unspoiled bushveld, has taught me that each landscape, each creature, each moment is a gift—a reminder of the sacred woven into the fabric of life.
South Africa's beauty, a gift that deepens my connection to God and reminds me of the sacred woven into the Fabric of life.
