Jacaranda tree in full purple bloom decorated with warm lights, Christmas gifts beneath it, celebrating love during a South African summer Christmas.

Beneath jacaranda light, love blooms differently here — warm, unhurried, and held in the glow of a South African Christmas.

South African Love Note for This Sacred Season

I’ll be honest — it’s a little hard to believe it’s Christmas when the thermometer insists it’s 88 degrees outside. The windows are open, the air is warm, and everything in nature seems to be stretching, blooming, and humming along as if it were any other summer day. No frosted windows. No crackling fires. No heavy coats pulled close.

And yet… here we are.

This sacred season has arrived quietly, dressed in sunshine and jacaranda petals instead of snow. And perhaps that’s exactly why it’s asking something different of me this year.

The past two months have been full — in the very best way. Family visits, shared meals, long conversations, laughter filling the house, memories layered upon memories. The kind of fullness that leaves your heart deeply grateful and your body gently suggesting, “Alright now… let’s sit for a moment.”

So that’s what I’m doing.

I’m taking a breath.

Not rushing into festivities or expectations. Not forcing a feeling because the calendar says I should. I’m letting Christmas meet me where I actually am — in this warm place, in this slower rhythm, in a season shaped by gratitude and preparation.

Because alongside the pause, there is also readiness.

In the quieter spaces between visits and celebrations, my days have taken on a different rhythm — one shaped by physio exercises, careful stretches, pool walks, and gentle strengthening as I prepare for an upcoming total knee replacement. It isn’t glamorous. There’s no festive soundtrack. Just steady, faithful work — one repetition at a time, one slow walk through the pool, one small act of trust in what lies ahead.

Some days it feels grounding.
Some days it feels tedious.
Some days it feels like love, disguised as effort.

And maybe that’s part of the sacredness too.

This season isn’t asking me to perform joy. It’s inviting me into presence — to tend to my body with kindness, to respect its limits, and to prepare with patience rather than fear. To smile at the irony of doing leg exercises while Christmas unfolds quietly around me in flip-flops and summer light.

(And yes — Christmas in summer will probably always feel a little strange to this Wisconsin-born heart.)

Still, love has a way of showing up anyway.

In shared stories.
In quieter mornings.
In muscles learning new patterns.
In gratitude that settles gently after a season of togetherness.

This, too, is Christmas.

Not loud.
Not hurried.
But honest.
And held.

Prayer for this sacred season, inviting peace, presence, and love through gentle words and quiet reflection.

And in the quiet that follows prayer, I’m reminded why I write.

I write to create a small, gentle place to pause, to breathe, and to notice the beauty woven into ordinary life. To each of you who reads these words and walks this journey with me — thank you. Your presence is a blessing and a small, sparkling light in my life. My hope is that this space continues to be one where we can arrive just as we are, rest for a moment, and leave carrying a little more peace than we brought with us.

With love, gratitude, and a heart learning to rest,
Renée
