Jacaranda tree in full purple bloom with fallen blossoms creating a carpet of petals in a South African garden.

The jacaranda trees of South Africa turn everyday spaces into scenes of quiet wonder. Beneath this towering bloom, soft purple petals scatter across the ground like nature’s confetti, inviting us to pause, breathe, and notice the beauty woven into simple moments. This image captures the fleeting grace of jacaranda season—where light, color, and serenity gather in a single breath of spring.

It has been a season, friends — the kind that sweeps you up in its arms, spins you around, and leaves you smiling, breathless, and amazed at how much life can fit into a few short weeks. And yet, even in the whirlwind, I found myself gathering Joy’s Threads — those quiet, shimmering moments that stitch themselves into memory long before we realize their depth.

For nearly a month, my daughter was here visiting from the United States — our first long stretch together in five years. We wandered the Zuurberg mountains beside elephants, soaked in the beauty of Alkantmooi Nature Reserve, and watched lightning shimmer across the Sundays River as though the sky itself were weaving light into the night. We took a ferry to Featherbed, shared late-night conversations, and gathered Joy’s Threads in simple, sacred ways: through laughter, stillness, and the cherished gift of time.

Just a week after she returned home, the next wave of life’s beautiful chaos arrived. Mr. P’s children and their partners flew in from England and Amsterdam, joined by her parents, all gathering before traveling together for a family wedding in Cape Town. Our quiet home transformed overnight into a lively sanctuary filled with suitcases, stories, shared meals, and the warm glow of evening braais drifting through the garden.

And then came the adventure of locating charging stations for the electric car — a pursuit that should, in all fairness, be classified as an endurance sport in South Africa. Between hosting, planning, cooking, and showing guests our corner of the world, we took everyone to Addo, hoping to grace them with a grand elephant sighting. Naturally, this was the one day they chose to vanish. Yet even in their absence, we still gathered Joy’s Threads — in the anticipation, in the laughter, and in the shared delight of simply being together.

As the days rushed by, I tried to finish editing the monthly Lumen magazine before we took off to Cape Town for the wedding. I was so close to completing it — but just as I reached my final stretch, the internet collapsed, leaving me one frustrated click away from the deadline. Life, once again, reminding me that even when plans unravel, Joy’s Threads continue to weave themselves through the edges.

I’ll be away for another week, gathering more Joy’s Threads as we go, but I look forward to returning to my writing rhythm, my camera, and to all of you.

As the holiday season begins, may your days be woven with gentleness, warmth, and the soft but brilliant threads of joy that remind us life is still beautiful — even in the chaos.

With love, laughter, and a grateful heart,
Renée ✨
