Hands weaving colorful threads on a loom — symbolizing surrender and trust in the unfolding of life’s messy and beautiful tapestry.

Sometimes the threads tangle.  Sometimes the hands tire.  But grace is still being woven.

This image of hands weaving reminds me that life, like a tapestry, is created one thread at a time. Not every thread is smooth — some are knotted, some bright, some worn — yet each is needed to form the whole. In this season of my life, surrender means trusting the Divine Weaver’s hand, even when the pattern is not yet clear. It is about releasing control over the threads I cannot manage, and showing up faithfully to tend the ones placed in my care. Surrender is not passive — it is the quiet courage to keep weaving through uncertainty, knowing that in time, beauty will emerge.

How to Root Yourself in Surrender Through Life's Messy Threads

A journaled journey through healing, surrender, and soulful transformation.

Personal Journal Entry

Surrender — such a gentle word, yet one that stirs deep resistance in me. It sounds so soft, yet asks so much. And yet, here I am this week, invited once again to lean into surrender through life’s messy threads.

My knee, still aching and uncertain after surgery, reminds me of the fragility of this body. A doctor’s firm nudge to lose weight — a request that tugs on years of tangled emotions — echoes through my mind. Family estate disputes seem to drain not only patience but love itself some days.

A son’s wedding shimmers on the horizon, a bright and beautiful thread — yet one I fear I may not walk toward with the strength I had hoped for. And my daughter’s aching body and questioning heart break mine daily, with questions I cannot answer, prayers I can only offer.

In this woven chaos — beauty and burden knotted together — I am reminded: I am not called to hold every thread. I am called only to root myself in surrender, and trust the Divine Weaver’s hand, knowing that even the most tangled strands may yet be woven into grace.

Why This Post Feels Different

You may notice that today’s post feels more like a journal entry than a typical article. That is intentional.

This year, life itself has invited me onto a deeper path of healing and transformation — not just in body, but in spirit. As I walk this season of surrender, uncertain health, and life’s messy threads, I want to share this journey more openly — one faithful breath, one vulnerable reflection at a time.

And so, the format of these posts will follow the rhythm of life itself: sometimes structured, sometimes raw, always real. I hope these words will meet you where you are — and remind us both that we never walk these tangled paths alone.

Seascape with waves breaking gently on rocky shore beneath a clouded sky, overlaid with the verse “Be still, and know that I am God” — a visual meditation on surrender and trust.
This is one of my favorite images of surrender — the sea in motion, yet held. The rocks remind me that life’s circumstances may feel rough, but beneath the shifting waves there is an unchanging presence. In a week when my heart has wrestled with what I cannot control — my health, my weight journey, family dynamics, and the unknowns ahead — this verse speaks straight to my soul. Surrender is not about stilling life’s waves. It is about being still within them — anchored in trust, rooted in the knowing that I am held by God’s love. Today, this image reminds me again: I do not have to calm the sea. I only need to surrender and be still.

Where I Am Right Now

A Not-Quite-Surrendered Work in Progress

And here surrender… well, begins-ish. Let’s be honest — I am not floating through this season with serene acceptance just yet. I’m more of a work in progress, surrendering by inches, sometimes claw marks included.

Not to despair — but to acknowledge that I must now walk this stretch of the road with intention, hope, and a fair bit of self-talk.

Weight loss, that old relentless thread, has reappeared — not as vanity, not as punishment, but as a threshold: lose enough weight, and I might avoid major surgery. Or at least face it stronger.

And yet, surrender is slippery when the body holds long histories of struggle. I’ve battled with weight most of my life, and here it is again, center stage, holding the mic. “One more round?” it seems to ask. I’m learning to say: one more step.

A second doctor voices a gentler hope: perhaps if I can release this weight, the replacement might be postponed, or even avoided. Yet with that hope comes the fine print: this is no easy surgery. It is longer and harder than a hip replacement, and months of rehab lie ahead — the orthopedic version of an ultramarathon, minus the cheering crowds.

And so this week, surrender (or my best attempt at it) looks like this:

  • Choosing to move forward even when the path is blurry and I’d rather take a nap.

  • Listening to my body with love — or at least with more curiosity than criticism.

  • Trusting that each small step I take — physically, emotionally, spiritually — matters. Even if sometimes I take two steps forward and one long pause for chocolate contemplation.

“We do not surrender all at once. We surrender one small thread at a time — and find grace woven through them all.”

Insight of the Week

How Surrender Grounds Us When Life's Threads Shift

This part of the post is as much a sermon to myself as it is an offering to you. If I sound wise here — please know it’s wisdom I am still clutching for as I flail. Picture me: a fledgling being nudged (okay, shoved) out of the nest, flapping awkward wings on the way down, hoping they’ll open before impact. That’s where I am with surrender this week.

I am learning — again — that surrender does not mean giving up. It means giving in to the flow of what is now true, whether I like it or not.

The knee will not undo its damage. The scale will not change in a day (despite my ongoing fantasies about miracle solutions). The months ahead may hold surgery, or they may hold unexpected healing — I cannot know, and trust me, I’ve tried to predict it all.

But what I can do — what I must do — is surrender striving. I can surrender self-judgment (on repeat). I can root myself in the simple faith that each small act — one healthy meal, one walk, one honest breath — is a thread of healing being woven.

Humor helps. When faced with “months of difficult rehab,” sometimes the only faithful response is to laugh, pray, and begin. And then laugh again when the beginning feels more like stumbling.

Surrender is not about being passive. It is about showing up, wobbly wings and all — being faithful in this body, in this season, one surrendered thread at a time.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

A wet cormorant with a grumpy expression, feathers tousled and gaze intense — symbolizing the imperfect, reluctant parts of the surrender journey.
"On certain days, this is me: all puffed up, slightly irritated, questioning the process — yet still here, still trying to trust."

Some days, surrender feels like an open-hearted prayer beneath sunlit skies.
Other days — well — I’m more like this cormorant. Damp, a little ruffled, glaring sideways at life and at God, asking: “Really? This too?”

But here’s the grace: surrender doesn’t require perfection. It only asks for presence.
Even in my grumpiest, most un-surrendered moments, I am still part of this story being woven.
And if God can work through birds (grumpy ones included), surely He can handle my flailing heart too.

Gentle Practices

Simple Ways to Root Yourself in Surrender This Week

– Write your surrender: Each morning, journal one sentence beginning: Today, I surrender…
– Photograph the ordinary grace: One image a day of beauty among messiness — a wilted bloom, worn hands, a shaft of light.
– Move with compassion: Whether walking or stretching, let each movement whisper: I surrender striving; I choose life.
– Breath prayer: On each inhale: God, hold me. On each exhale: I surrender what is not mine to carry.
– Release perfection: Whether in eating, relating, or showing up — choose surrender over striving.

Close-up of plant roots tightly woven through soil in a pot — symbolizing the inner work of grounding oneself in surrender through life’s complexities.
"Even when the roots are tangled, life still reaches toward the light. Surrender begins by sinking deeper into trust, not striving."

This image spoke deeply to me as I wrote this post.
Just like these roots — dense, messy, imperfect — my life and heart don’t always feel gracefully grounded. Surrender is not about having tidy roots. It’s about allowing the roots I do have to anchor deeper into trust.

Some weeks, surrender means tending to the soil beneath me — nourishing my spirit with small practices, with grace, with patience.
Even when life feels tangled, the act of rooting — again and again — is its own kind of faith.

Words to Hold When the Threads Feel Tangled

Closing Thought

With love, laughter, and open hands, may we each find peace and resilience — one surrendered thread, one faithful breath at a time.

Final Prayer

Today, I choose grace over striving, and hope over fear.
I walk in the light of God’s love — one faithful step at a time.
My body is a vessel for life, not shame.
My heart is open to healing.
My spirit is being renewed.

I do not walk alone — God walks with me.
And today, that is enough.

And because no Journal Journey is complete without a little feline wisdom… here’s how Mister is modeling surrender this week — better than I am, I must admit.

A gray and white cat sprawled luxuriously on a pink chair, mid-yawn, exuding relaxed contentment — a humorous visual reminder to embrace rest and surrender.
"Mister says: Why worry when you can nap near the fire instead? Surrender level: Expert."

P.S. — How about you? Are you feeling more like Mister this week… or more like tangled roots? I’d love to hear how you’re finding your own way into surrender — share in the comments or come say hello.
