Back in the Game: Navigating a Sea of Emotions and Finding My Footing

Returning after spending two weeks with my daughter and her family, following her courageous battle with cancer surgery, evokes a myriad of emotions. The echoes of shared laughter, whispered conversations, and the palpable strength that filled the air linger in my heart. The experience was a tapestry of support, resilience, and familial love, woven through late-night talks and the quiet moments of solace. Now, back in the familiar surroundings of home, the echoes transform into a bittersweet symphony. The emotional landscape is nuanced, marked by gratitude for the precious moments and the weight of witnessing the profound strength my daughter exuded during her journey. As I find my feet in the routine of daily life once more, the resilience forged in those two weeks becomes a guiding light, reminding me that, even in the face of adversity, love and family are unwavering constants.

“It throbs, the pain coming in staggering pulses, like a second, ragged heartbeat. I cannot bring myself to do more than lie there and wait for it to ebb.” ― Holly Black

Honestly, the transition has not been without profound struggle. The echoes of the past two weeks resonate in my daily life, and I find myself grappling with a whirlwind of emotions. The journey through my daughter’s cancer journey has left an indelible mark, and coming to terms with the range of emotions is an ongoing process. The landscape is complex, marked by the painful hues of anger, sadness, guilt, fear, and denial. These emotions, though tumultuous, are part of the shared experience of parents who have been told their child has cancer. Each day unfolds with its own set of challenges, and acknowledging these feelings is a crucial step toward healing. As I navigate this emotional terrain, I am learning to embrace the ebb and flow, understanding that the path to acceptance is both unique and nonlinear.

In the past week, I’ve poured my emotions onto paper, recounting the incredible courage my daughter has shown over the last thirteen years since she was tested for the BRCA gene. It’s been a deeply emotional journey, and I’ve found solace and release in putting words to our experiences. Yet, recognizing the weight of these emotions, I’ve decided to take a break—a pause to become centered and strong for my daughter and our family. This respite allows me to recharge, to gather the strength needed to continue supporting her through the challenges that lie ahead. Taking a step back is not a sign of retreat but rather a moment of self-care, ensuring that I can be a pillar of strength for my loved ones. In the silence of this break, I find the space to breathe, to reflect, and to prepare for the chapters that await in this ongoing journey.

Homeward Bound: Navigating the Misadventures of Returning to South Africa

The journey back, although filled with incredible sadness at leaving my family in the United States, was not without its own set of challenges. The emotions that accompanied the farewell were a complex mix—woven with threads of love, nostalgia, and the stark reality of physical distance.

In the tapestry of my journey, an unexpected lesson was woven with threads of humor and a touch of irony. The advice to always keep a spare set of clothes in your carry-on suddenly transformed from a travel tip into a personal mantra. It’s the kind of wisdom you hear but never truly believe applies to you—until, of course, it does. In a twist of fate, I found myself living out the very scenario I thought was reserved for others. Missed connections, unexpected delays, and the bustling chaos of travel resulted in an unforeseen turn of events—I missed my flight. As I navigated this hiccup in my plans, the absence of that spare set of clothes became a humorous reminder that life often unfolds in the most unexpected ways. A lesson learned, and perhaps a story to share over a chuckle or two in the future.

In what I deemed a stroke of travel genius, I meticulously packed everything into my carry-on, accompanied by an additional bag for all the extras. The prospect of navigating the labyrinthine processes of airport check-ins, security checkpoints, and gate-hopping, especially in the sprawling expanse of Atlanta Airport, seemed like a daunting expedition I was determined to avoid. Call it a strategic move or a calculated avoidance of potential travel hiccups, my plan was clear—to streamline the journey and minimize the logistical dance that airports often demand. Little did I anticipate that despite my careful preparations, life had its own itinerary, and the unexpected would unfold in ways I hadn’t quite envisioned.

Amid tearful farewells and a sequence of hugs, I navigated the emotional back-and-forth of checking in, only to find myself pulled back for one last embrace. It was a flurry of emotions, a bittersweet rhythm of goodbyes and lingering connections. Yet, with a deep breath and a resolve to carry the warmth of those final hugs, I eventually found my gate and boarded the waiting plane. In the end, the whirlwind of emotions and moments of pause coalesced seamlessly, and I embarked on the journey, all in good time.

Delayed Gratification😁

As we sat waiting for takeoff, our journey took an unexpected detour into the realm of airline humor. The announcement crackled through the intercom, and the pilot’s voice, laced with a dash of wit, explained our delay due to a “malfunction.” A collective groan echoed , a symphony of shared disappointment. However, the pilot, seizing the moment, injected a dose of levity into the situation. “Ladies and gentlemen, I share your disappointment. But we’re going on a long flight, and I can assure you that I would rather be on the ground wishing I were in the air than in the air wishing I were on the ground.” A moment of stillness hung in the air, and then, unexpectedly, applause erupted—a spontaneous ovation for turning a moment of inconvenience into a shared chuckle.

Yet, as the minutes stretched into what felt like an eternity, the anticipation for takeoff became a seemingly endless waiting game. Time, usually a steadfast companion, now played tricks on our sense of urgency. Each passing moment felt like a chapter lingering before the climax. And then, finally, with a sign-off from the pilot, we embraced the assurance that the delay was behind us, and the journey, albeit tardy, was ready to unfold its wings.  Off we went, into the wild blue yonder.

Lost in Laughter: Navigating the Missing Plane Chronicles at the Atlanta Airport

As the green light for takeoff blinked, I couldn’t shake off the looming possibility of missing my connecting flight in Atlanta to Johannesburg, South Africa. With only one flight in the cards, I resorted to a comedic medley of crossed fingers and toes, fervent prayers, and anything else my frantic mind could conjure—all in the hopes that the mystical tailwinds would work their magic and catapult us into a time-warp, catching up on precious minutes.

Touching down with a mere 10 minutes left until boarding closed for my overnight 17-hour flight to South Africa felt like a plot twist in a comedy of errors. Now, for those who’ve had the pleasure (or pain) of navigating the vast expanse of the Atlanta airport, you’ll understand the cruel irony: the gates for domestic and international flights are seemingly placed at opposite ends of the universe. The journey involved a symphony of walking, hopping on trains, and, you guessed it, more walking. It was a race against time.

Faced with the daunting odds of missing my flight, I approached a Delta support counter, armed with a tale of woe and a ticking clock. As I spilled out my predicament, the response I received was a deadpan, “You have 10 minutes, aren’t you going to try and make it?” It was a comedic twist in the plot, as if I had stumbled into a scene from a movie where the character’s fate hangs in the balance, and the universe throws a dry punchline their way. With a mix of determination and the absurdity of the situation, I embarked on what could only be described as a comically frenzied sprint through the labyrinth of the Atlanta airport.

Runway Roulette: The Comedy of Missing Planes, You Guessed It

Guess What?

As I rounded the corner, my hopeful anticipation dwindled into a scene straight out of a comedy sketch. No one in sight except two agents at the gate, and there it was—the sign that seemed to scream, “Boarding Closed.” Frustration threatened to bring me to tears, but my resolve held strong. I approached the agents, seeking a lifeline in this travel saga. Their response? A nonchalant point towards another counter, as if solutions were hidden among the clouds, waiting to be summoned. The absurdity of the situation unfolded like a comedic plot twist, leaving me torn between laughter and the urge to break into frustrated tears.

Navigating the unexpected dilemma with no point in rushing, I took a moment to catch my breath. Summoning a facade of fake calmness, I approached the counter to seek a resolution to the novel situation I now found myself in—a departure from the many flights I had taken in the past. In the midst of the travel chaos, at least I found a sliver of humor—I was, after all, not navigating the debacle with a chorus of baggage in tow. Sometimes, a touch of levity amidst the chaos is the baggage we need to lighten the load.

I didn’t have to wait to speak to someone, yet found myself standing there for over an hour as the agent engaged in a lengthy phone conversation. Initially, they mentioned there was no room on the next day’s non-stop flight—a prospect that left me flabbergasted. They proposed a convoluted route through the Caribbean islands, a 36-hour odyssey to get home. Not quite my idea of an efficient journey! I negotiated with fervor, determined to avoid spending more time than necessary in transit. After some back-and-forth, they eventually managed to secure a spot for me on the next evening’s direct flight to Johannesburg—a much more sensible option despite the inevitable 24-hour travel time.

Receiving a voucher for a hotel room and three meals, I was directed toward the hotel shuttle. In a stroke of luck (or divine intervention), my only provisions were a toothbrush and toothpaste—praise the travel gods. However, faced with the prospect of changing into fresh clothes, I inquired about retrieving my luggage. The response? A diplomatic announcement that my luggage had been successfully liberated from the plane but was on an extended vacation of its own, taking a leisurely 3 or 4 hours to reunite with me.

In a moment of tired, grumpy clarity, I gracefully declined the offer for more waiting. Picture me, standing in the dark and cold, the shuttle-watchman, awaiting the elusive transport. But here’s the punchline: every hotel shuttle under the moon made its grand entrance and exit, each one teasing me with the prospect of warmth and comfort, while mine remained a celestial no-show. The cosmic comedy of it all, where the punchline was a freezing wait and a watchful gaze at the comings and goings of every shuttle but mine. Talk about being left out in the cold, literally!

From Gloom to Dawn: Navigating Toward the Morning Light"

As I triumphantly strolled into the hotel, it greeted me with warmth and tranquility, and lo and behold, my vouchers cooperated without a hitch. Elevator ride? To the 6th floor, please! Before indulging in the comforts of the room, I took a brief moment to update the world on my whereabouts and status, as one does in the digital age.

With a sigh of relief and perhaps a chuckle from the universe at the day’s misadventures, I said a prayer of gratitude for the surprisingly smooth resolution of it all. Post-refreshing myself, I descended to the hotel’s petite burger joint. Picture this: a quaint setting with just me and another lonely table. Armed with two $15.00 vouchers, I declared a Gin and tonic essential after a day of not eating. A warm meal later, and I was all set to test the comforts of the inviting King bed. Nighty night was swift—sometimes, the quickest way to end a day is to surrender to the embrace of a cozy bed after a rendezvous with a burger and a G&T.

As the day turns into night, keep your worries out of sight. Close your eyes and go to sleep; all the good times are yours to keep. Sweet dreams and good night. Relax and unwind; may your dreams be kind.

Home at Last: The Triumph and Tales of an Epic Journey's End

Bacchus

Emerging from slumber to a sunlit day, I embraced the hope of reuniting with my beloveds, Mr. P and our dog (a furball who firmly believes he’s a person, and we’re not about to correct him). 😁 Realizing I had inadvertently skipped celebrating our second wedding anniversary by a day due to the plane misadventure the previous night, I chuckled at the unexpected plot twist.

Taking my sweet time to rise, fortified by the elixir of life (coffee), and attempting to appear somewhat presentable despite the lack of hair implements or a wardrobe refresh, I geared up for round two at the airport. This time, I had a luxurious four hours to navigate customs and locate my gate—an ample buffer to ensure history didn’t repeat itself. No missing the flight today; I was determined to make it back to my boys and our four-legged furball with delusions of personhood. 😁

Successfully boarded, I made a beeline for the back, aka Row 51—the holy grail of aisle seats on a marathon 16-hour flight. It’s practically a survival necessity. As I settled in, a peculiar feeling crept in; it was déjà vu of being on the wrong plane. Suddenly, everyone around me morphed into Paul Bunyans—big, hefty, and bearded. Sweet as could be, though!

Engaging in a bit of investigative small talk with my seatmate, it dawned on me—aha! This was the plane of South African men who had bid farewell to their families for extended stints on American farms. The pieces of the puzzle fell into place, and my aisle seat in the midst of these friendly giants became a testament to the camaraderie of the journey.

Nestled in for the extended odyssey, I embarked on a mission to conquer the long hours with a strategic blend of snoozing, movie marathons, and the classic “stand up, walk to the bathroom, and attempt to revive the sensation in your behind” routine. Because when faced with the prospect of being seated for what feels like an eternity, one must unleash the full arsenal of butt-reviving maneuvers! 😄

From One Misadventure to the Next: Believe it or Not - Airport Edition

Navigating the oceanic odyssey and weathering the immigration theatrics, I confidently thought a brisk one-hour layover was the green light for smooth sailing. But, hold on tight, guess what decided to make a grand entrance just around the corner?

Seems like my baggage developed a rebellious streak of independence. There I stood, at the carousel, time playing a leisurely game of hide-and-seek, observing the crowd gradually thinning as folks scooped up their luggage and sauntered off into the sunset, heading toward their happily-ever-afters. And there I was, left with a suitcase-sized void in my life. Oh, the drama! 😄

In the throes of panic, I must confess, I could practically hear the Jaws theme song playing in the background. The hunt for the elusive lost luggage counter became a quest of epic proportions. With a sinking feeling, I started entertaining the notion that my bags were probably enjoying the sunny weather back in Atlanta while I was left to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the airport.

Wandering for what felt like an odyssey, I found myself unintentionally heading outside. A sympathetic agent, witnessing my impending meltdown, accompanied me back along the winding corridor to a desk cleverly concealed behind some pillars, strategically positioned across from the carousel. If only my legs had gotten the memo to grow a few inches, we might have broken a land-speed record. Time was ticking away faster than my little legs could carry me.

The paperwork dance commenced – a thrilling masterpiece in the art of bureaucracy. Once completed, it was another sprint down the corridor, this time from international to domestic. With less than half an hour on the clock to conquer the checkpoint, I couldn’t help but groan audibly. Ah, the joys of international travel! 😅

Embracing the reality that there was nothing I could do in that moment, I briskly headed towards the gate, arriving with a mere five minutes to spare. The flight to Port Elizabeth was a brief two hours, and with the freedom from waiting for my luggage, I practically sprinted out to find my hero standing there, an incredibly welcome sight.

The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline luggage. Mark Russell
Sloane Crosley brilliantly captures the plight of being the lone passenger left in the baggage carousel saga. The screeching halt, signaling the end of the luggage reunion, amplifies the silent, echoing defeat of realizing your bags are still on an adventure of their own. It's a symphony of disappointment that rivals even the most cringe-worthy sounds.

Lost Luggage Chronicles: Where Art Thou, Suitcases?

Ah, the grand homecoming! Jetlagged but jubilant, I shrugged off the absence of my luggage, reassured by the agent’s solemn promise of a doorstep delivery. But alas! As the weekend waved goodbye and my cases failed to show up, panic set in. Cue the dramatic phone calls. Suddenly, the brain whispered: “They’ve been kidnapped!” Yes, I, the wise traveler who dodged the laptop-laden carry-ons, found myself in this caper.

Calling, calling, only to be greeted by that same old generic response, “They’re not here.” Not here? Johannesburg? Atlanta? Mars, maybe? The bags had vanished into thin air! Ready to declare them as official lost citizens, I called in the cavalry – my hero, Mr. P. Off we trotted to the airport, where we met the super helpful manager of the local airline. She got on the phone, did her magic, and voila! Well, almost. They still had no clue where the bags were, but at least now they were clueless with extra effort. Bag-less but hopeful, we left the airport, pondering if my luggage had developed legs and wandered off.

Just as we were nearing the end of our hope, a call. We raced back to the airport, a desperate mission to meet another airline I hadn’t even flown with. Lo and behold, there they were, lined up like sheep! The missing culprits, the prodigal luggage, were found! I emerged, triumphant, as Mr. P brought forth the wayward bags. Peace and equilibrium were restored, and those elusive jeans of his were finally in their rightful place – the closet.

notre dame prayer for people affected by cancer

Heal me, Lord, that I may be healed; save me, that I may be saved, for it is you whom I praise.” (Jeremiah 17:14) ender God, life-giving Spirit, You compassionately hold the entire world in your hands. In your mercy, hear the prayers of your people: Keep guard over the sick and suffering and in a special way over those who suffer with breast cancer; grant them patience, hope, and peace, we pray: Merciful God, hear our prayer. Give courage to those with fearful hearts, especially those who feel isolated because of their illness; nourish and sustain them, we pray: Merciful God, hear our prayer. Strengthen those who give their energy and skill to healing the sick: doctors and nurses, surgeons and specialists, and all who seek new ways of relieving suffering, we pray: Merciful God, hear our prayer. Bless all those who devote themselves to scientific research for the benefit of the human family, especially those who dedicate their efforts to cancer research, we pray: Merciful God, hear our prayer. O God, our life, our health, our salvation, look with mercy on your people. Stir up in us a saving faith, that believing, we may be healed, and being healed, we may worthily give you thanks. Blessed are you both now and forever. Amen.
