Defining Spirituality:


Spirituality is a deeply personal and multifaceted concept that defies rigid definitions, encompassing the profound exploration of one’s inner self, connection to something greater, and the quest for meaning and purpose in life…this was my introduction.
This is what a Pentecostal Holy-Roller looked like in 1974 …At eighteen, I thought I was already a highly ‘spiritual’ person. Growing up in a cult brainwashed me to believe that I was the chosen ‘Bride of Christ’…a spiritually sanctified woman. I still remember a comment that there were only two things that a ‘godly’ female was allowed to do …eat and get pregnant.
After I left the ‘church’, I spent many years searching for the truth that resonated within me about ‘God’ and what the ultimate answers to life and the universe were… that we all ask in the darkness of the night.

- What do I want?
- What is my purpose?
- What is the meaning of life?
Everyone must find their own answers …for myself, I do not want to be considered ‘religious’ but a ‘spiritual’ person.
Formal religion is often an objective experience that focuses on external things…a church, books of scripture, eternal rituals, and observances. Spirituality has been an inward journey of connection to my Divine Creator without the condemnation and guilt of not following a rigid rule-based construct.
Religion can sometimes be based upon rigid interpretations of key teachings, which can create an exclusive worldview. Sadly, this religious “in-group” mentality was used to justify the exclusion of those deemed unworthy of God’s favor. Spirituality is the opposite, no one has a monopoly on the truth. All are welcome in God’s eyes.
Many religions contain an undercurrent of fear woven into their teachings (yep, got that one covered fully) …remember the fire and brimstone sermons creating a mental environment burdened in worry and anxiety over my worthiness and whether my actions would result in divine retribution (for me it was missing the ‘rapture’ and living through years of a horrible punishing life. My fate in the afterlife loomed like a spectre in the back of my mind, subtly influencing every thought and behaviour. I lived surrounded by the guilt and fear that held me tight within the controlling clutches of the ‘church’.
Shedding Fear: Embracing Courage and Liberation
Spirituality rejects rigid interpretations and exclusivity, welcoming all and embracing love as its guiding force. My spirituality comes from Love, discarding fear and worry in favor of a more loving, compassionate approach to life—and death. My choices and behaviour are guided not by fear of punishment, but rather by a desire to end suffering and create a peaceful and loving world for everyone. If I must choose a religion, it is named LOVE

In my journey of personal growth, I have realized the transformative power of shedding fear. Transitioning from a state of fear to one of courage has liberated me from self-imposed limitations. With each step forward, I have confronted my fears head-on, dismantling the barriers that held me back. Through self-reflection and self-compassion, I have gained a deeper understanding of the roots of my fears. Embracing vulnerability and resilience, I have learned to embrace discomfort and uncertainty as catalysts for growth. Moreover, by challenging my fears, I have discovered newfound strength and resilience within myself. Each triumph over fear has opened up a world of possibilities and expanded my horizons. Shedding fear has allowed me to embrace authenticity and live a life guided by courage, love, and personal fulfilment.

I have noticed finding myself feeling like a nap at noon, sounding like a creaky door that needs oiling…have a party keg instead of a 6-pack…a wild night is being up after 9pm… I can laugh, cough, sneeze, and pee all at the same time …wearing comfortable shoes instead of my beautiful heels …when my back goes out more than I do…and you wonder who that strange lady is when you walk past the mirror…I’m realizing that taking better care of myself isn’t a luxury – it’s a survival tactic.
Continuing to fulfil my potential and be able share love through my gifts to the world, means achieving and maintaining optimal physical health that lays a foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life, which encompasses my mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions…”the greatest wealth is health”.

Functional Health: Empowering Your Well-Being
As I age, functional independence becomes crucial-maintaining mobility, balance, strength, coordination, and over-all well-being. I never really thought it would come to this…in youth, it never crossed my mind to consider that what I was doing then would affect my life later…I did not think about being older… I’ll never be THAT old, although I’m glad I am…
I’m still vain and don’t want to be the dumpy, grey-haired grandma, but it does become more about functional independence…that ability to perform daily activities and maintain my independence without a great deal of significant limitations or reliance on other people…keeping mobility, my balance, strength, and coordination…in other words, the ability to get on the ground to take photos (and then get back up), to keep dancing the ‘cha-cha’ (move those hips, even though one is fake)…write my fantasy novel …the travel and explore the world with my husband …live, love, and share with those I love …just a few of my favorite things.

(How spiritually connected are you when you find yourself sitting on the couch, looking foggily at a large empty bag of your favorite ______ wondering where it all went… I just cross my fingers and hope God is not watching).
Regular exercise, healthy eating, and self-care practices help me to regulate my stress hormones, maintain emotional equilibrium and stay grounded spiritually. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle creates that foundation that supports my spiritual journey. When I am balanced, free from discomfort and functioning optimally, there is a greater sense of peace and harmony…allowing me to access states of deep relaxation, meditation, and spiritual connection more easily. When my brain is working optimally, I am more receptive to the spiritual, more connected.
